Hangin' Out With the Fun Guy

Why do I have a Picture of a hole? This is where I have found Oregon White Truffles, but not today.

While I trudged up and down the hill in the rain putting things away for the winter and checking out the fall colors I started noticing the shocking variety of fungi sprouting up everywhere. In huge rings, in spongy lumps, bright slimy reds and faint, almost ghostly lavenders.

I decided to start taking pictures so I could identify them later but it's hard to get a good, inclusive shot of them because they are mostly in low light and low to the ground. I haven't been able to ID very many of them yet, but I thought I would share them so you could see some of the crazy shapes and colors of these mysterious beings.

Oh, and Buck, sorry about the pun. I couldn't help myself.

  1. I love fungi. You have some cool ones over there. I really like the one that is sticking out of the ground that your hand is by. It looks almost fake.

  2. Hmmm...my guess is the photo with your hand is a shaggy mane, the one with the red cap might be an amanita muscaria, and the holey one a type of morel? Don't quote me on that, though! If you ever come across an out-of-print book called Reflections of the Fungaloids, it's worth buying.

  3. Hi Shim Farms! Your guess is as good as mine on the shrooms I have been able to ID a couple from the photos, but I gotta say there is a lot of fungi out there and they are not easy to ID since they come up in so many shapes.

My daughter gave me a book for Christmas "Mushrooming Without Fear" http://www.amazon.com/Mushrooming-without-Fear-Beginners-Collecting/dp/1602391602/ref=pd_sim_b_1

It's really excellent! I can't wait to use it.

Although fall is usually when you find mushrooms here I am really looking forward to finding some Morels this spring.

And hey Robin sorry I didn't catch your comment when you left it- I think that mushroom was the most surreal of the bunch. As it got older it got this creepy goo that hung down from the edges.
